Holy Cross Primary School is committed to being a Rights Respecting School, meaning we are dedicated to implementing the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of our school's ethos and culture. This begins with our school motto of 'Curamus', meaning 'We Care'.
Our Commitment:
-
Learning about Rights:
We are committed to teaching and learning about children's rights, ensuring that all students understand their rights and responsibilities as outlined in the UNCRC.
-
Respect and Inclusivity:
We foster a culture of respect, where all children feel valued, heard, and included, regardless of their background, ability, or beliefs.
-
Safe and Supportive Environment:
We strive to create a safe and supportive environment where children feel secure and empowered to express their views, participate in school life, and reach their full potential.
-
Active Participation:
We encourage active participation from all children, valuing their voices and perspectives in decision-making processes and school activities.
-
Duty-Bearers:
As adults, we recognize our role as duty-bearers, responsible for protecting, promoting, and realizing children's rights.
-
Rights-Based Approach:
We will address issues through a rights-based approach, ensuring that children's rights are considered and upheld in all policies and practices.
Examples of Our Actions:
- Through weekly assemblies, health and well-being lessons and special events we have been teaching children what their rights are and how these are upheld. In addition to the pupil voice groups already established in our school, we have created a steering group made up of pupils who were keen to ensure the rights of others were being protected. Through the steering group we created a playground charter, established a fair trade week, ran anti bullying events and kept the school up to date on our Rights Respecting School journey. We have also faciliateted events for parents to increase their knowledge and understanding of the UNCRC including hosting the NSPCC who delivered a 'Keeping Children Safe Online' workshop.
- We have achieved our bronze 'Rights Respecting School Award' and are currently working towards achieving silver.
- For more information on what's going on in the school look out for our newsletters, posts on X and SeeSaw and, of course, talk with your children. You can get more information on the UNCRC here: https://www.unicef.org.uk/what-we-do/un-convention-child-rights/
Our Vision:
By embracing the principles of Rights Respecting, we aim to:
- Empower children: to become confident and responsible citizens who can advocate for their rights and the rights of others.
- Promote positive relationships: among staff, students, and parents, creating a strong sense of community.
- Enhance children's wellbeing: fostering their self-esteem, mental health, and overall well-being.
We believe that by working together and showing 'Curamus', we can create a school where all children can thrive and reach their full potential.
